Equines are big business in this country, and that's not to be taken lightly, but as anyone who has spent much time around them knows, horses have a sense of themselves and refuse to be pigeon-holed, catalogued or otherwise restrained. When they are given their due as individual personalities, as they are in this book, an occasional startled giggle has to result. Calling on forty-plus years of experience, extensive research, and lots of trial-and-error, Joanne Friedman has put together a celebration of life with horses. A horseman's most important piece of equipment is a sense of humor, and Friedman liberally spices her advice with horse laughs. Whenever horses are called on to participate in human enlightenment, they do so with great enthusiasm and good humor. Meet the horses that populate Friedman's world, and your perception of life with horses will never be the same. Join Friedman and the horses of Gallant Hope Farm as they slog through mud season, experience Murphy's Law in full effect at a show, set up a (mostly) working farm, and learn about clicker training. Your perception of life with horses will never be the same....

"Joe Camp is a master storyteller." - The New York Times The anxiously anticipated sequel to the National Best Seller The Soul of a Horse - Life Lessons from the Herd. "In Born Wild Joe Camp continues to demonstrate, in simple, unpretentious eloquence, how much we two-legged creatures can learn from horses. One of the rewards for reading the book is that it can be taken literally as the tale of a newborn horse fancier learning his craft, or as the road map for humanity on how to develop leadership in any herd. With humor, affection and discernment, Camp repeatedly underscores that true relationships are built on trust with any creatures."- Jack L. Kennedy, The Joplin Independent Born Wild is a study in trust. A story about molding your life to ask what’s in it for the other person, the dog, the cat, or in this case, the horse. instead of asking what’s in it for yourself. It’s a story about how the soul prospers from sharing, caring, relating, and fulfilling… because nothing can make you feel better than doing something good for another being. And it’s about the fact that there is nothing more important in life than love. This is the synthesis of this book and why it came into being. "Joe Camp's new book "Born Wild" is making me late everywhere...I can't put it down...Kudos Joe!” - Cate Crismani, Editor - True Cowboy Born Wild – The Soul of a Horse is another voyage into uncharted territory from the couple who had no horses and no clue just a few short years ago. A journey of discovery with wild horses going domestic and domestic horses going wild. And a federal agency going mad. Told as only Joe Camp can tell it. For everyone who has ever loved a horse or loved the idea of loving a horse. The author of the highly acclaimed National Best Seller The Soul of a Horse – Life Lessons from the Herd strikes again with an uplifting, inspirational love story of trust, tears and joy that will once again be changing lives for the better all across the planet. His books are must-reads for those who love animals of any species.” - Monty Roberts - Author of New York Timers Best-seller The Man Who Listens to Horses “Somedays this battle has me saying ‘what am I doing? Horse Crazy explores the meaning behind the love between girls and horses. Jean O'Malley Halley, a self-professed "horse girl," contends that this relationship and its cultural signifiers influence the manner in which young girls define their identity when it comes to gender. Halley examines how popular culture, including the "pony book" genre, uses horses to encourage conformity to gender norms but also insists that the loving relationship between a girl and a horse fundamentally challenges sexist and mainstream ideas of girlhood. Horse Crazy looks at the relationships between girls and horses through the frameworks of Michel Foucault's concepts of normalization and biopower, drawing conclusions about the way girls' agency is both normalized and resistant to normalization. Segments of Halley's own experiences with horses as a young girl, as well as experiences from the perspective of other girls, are sources for examination. "Horsey girls," as she calls them, are girls who find a way to defy the expectations given to them by society-thinness, obsession with makeup and beauty, frailty-and gain the possibility of freedom in the process. Drawing on Nicole Shukin's uses of animal capital theories, Halley also explores the varied treatment of horses themselves as an example of the biopolitical use of nonhuman animals and the manipulation and exploitation of horse life. In so doing she engages with common ways we think and feel about animals and with the technologies of speciesism....

There is no denying that the emotional bond between horses and the humans who love them can reach mystical proportions, and nowhere is that relationship more evident than in these twenty-four true-life accounts of horses rescuing people. Here is the story of a seventeen-year-old Apache youth whom a horse-rescue project retrieved from drug abuse; a mother whose young son was about to be dragged to his death before the horse recognized the child’s plight; a Vietnam veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder whose work with horses keeps him on an even keel; and the owner of a Miniature Horse that serves as a “seeing eye” guide animal. As varied as the stories are, all share the same conclusion: “My horse saved my life.” Originally published in hardcover as Horses That Saved Lives....
