Transmission of audio data over networks, such as the Internet, is a widespread technology. Up to now, the primary application is voice transmission (Voice over IP). Although modern Voice over IP systems are designed to reduce the audio latency, it is still too high for the bidirectional transmission of live music. The construction of a low-latency music environment would enable distributed musical performances and "Jamming over IP". This thesis takes a step in this direction by building an Audio over IP system as an embedded system. All components needed for a jamming session over the Internet are integrated in a handy box on the basis of a Raspberry Pi. This required the development of a Linux kernel driver. Furthermore, a software for low-latency audio transmission is build and evaluated, considering audio quality, data rate, and the reduced computational power of the embedded system....

This book explains the fundamentals of audio, how it is digitized and compressed and the basics of audio streaming. You will learn why IP digital audio has replaced many analog and digital audio systems. Industry standard IP audio systems can be more cost effective and flexible than dedicated and/or proprietary audio systems. Using IP audio allows for equipment and software cost reduction, increased ability to control audio services, and provides new media capabilities. The popular analog and digital audio formats are described along with how audio signals are captured and converted from analog to digital form (audio digitization). Because the amount of digital information that is needed to represent high-quality raw digital audio requires require several Megabits per second, digital audio is compressed to allow transmission through data networks such as the Internet. You will learn that audio compression is the process of reducing the amount of transmission bandwidth or data transmission rate using waveform coding, perceptual coding or voice compression techniques. When compressed, an audio signal can be transmitted on circuits with relatively narrow channel bandwidth or using data rates 4 to 16 times lower than their original uncompressed form. There are several different IP Audio compression methods and protocols that are available such as MP3 and AAC. Explained are complexity and quality tradeoffs along with common problem areas and risks with sending IP Audio. You will discover how audio streaming systems allow for the efficient sending of packet audio through data networks that may delay or loose packets. Also, you will learn how audio capturing is used to receive, code and to storing audio media. Find out about different types of streaming protocols and how they are used to deliver and control the real-time delivery of media (such as audio and or audio streaming). Digital audio quality measurements and monitoring is explained including MOS, SNR, THD, FR and dynamic range. Some of the most important topics featured are: .Analog Audio Formats .Digital Audio Formats .Capturing Audio .Audio Digitization .Audio Compression .Converting Audio Formats .Multimedia File Formats .Streaming Digital Audio .Audio Control Protocols .Digital Audio Quality...

Network Technology for Digital Audio examines the transfer of audio and other related data over digital communication networks. Encompassing both the data communication and audio industries, it unravels the intricacies of computer networking technique and theory, viewed from an audio perspective. Looking at commercial and ratified standards both current and developing, this book covers digital architectural solutions such as IEEE 1394 (Firewire), USB, Fibre Channel and ATM alongside their counterparts within the audio industry: *S/P DIF, ADAT, AES/EBU and MADI are discussed from the audio industry standpoint and solutions contrasted *Explanations of packet switching and internetworking are also included. Studying new developments and trends, it covers the pros and cons and looks at the work being done to deliver the requirements of the digital audio environment. Proprietary and open systems developed within the audio industry are examined, with each case being supported with appropriate history and clear technical explanation. The book helps readers build a better understanding of the issues surrounding the transfer of real-time audio digital data. Touching on the history of the Internet, and the technologies it spawned, it explains the theory and possibilities for the same technologies to support inter-device communications within a studio environment. Network Technology For Digital Audio will provide on tap knowledge for students and lecturers on audio-related and music technology courses and will prepare the working professionals within the industry for progress and changes to come. Network Technology for Digital Audio is part of the Focal Press Music Technology Series....
