This book is a first-year graduate text on electromagnetic fields and waves. It is the translated and revised edition of the Chinese version with the same title published by the Publishing House of Electronic Industry (PHEI) of China in 1994. The text is based on the graduate course lectures on "Advanced Elec trodynamics" given by the authors at Tsinghua University. More than 300 students from the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Depart ment of Applied Physics have taken this course during the last decade. Their particular fields are microwave and millimeterwave theory and technology, physical electronics, optoelectronics and engineering physics. As the title of the book shows, the texts and examples in the book concentrate mainly on electromagnetic theory related to microwaves and optoelectronics, or light wave technology. However, the book can also be used as an intermediate-level text or reference book on electromagnetic fields and waves for students and scientists engaged in research in neighboring fields....

This book explores the fundamental but often overlooked connection between Maxwell's equations, as they are taught in undergraduate electrical engineering courses, and special relativity. Written for an audience of practicing engineers instead of theoretical physicists, it exposes the underlying contradictions brought about by the emergence of electromagnetic theory, one of the greatest triumphs in mathematical physics of all time that unified the phenomena of electricity, magnetism, and light, into a world in which the classical Galilean principle of relativity was thought incontrovertible. It explains how Einstein redefined the concepts of space and time and what it means to measure them, while altogether disbanding the notion of global simultaneity. A manifestly relativistic formulation of electromagnetic laws is first presented and then applied to common engineering problems, like the interaction of electromagnetic fields at dynamic interfaces, the derivation of propagating modes in closed metal waveguides, and the foundations of microwave network theory. Mathematical toolkits for relativistic analysis, such as tensor notation and spacetime algebra, are explained. These tools are then used to analyze the consequences of motion at relativistic speeds upon otherwise well-known electromagnetic circuit behaviors. Well-drawn and insightful diagrams along with articulate explanations help the reader to gain an intuitive understanding of four-dimensional spacetime and the nature of the electromagnetic field in that context, while summary tables and comprehensive appendices serve as a resource for further self-directed exploration. Readers trained in microwave engineering will learn to see their field from a new perspective, and shall gain from that new insight the ability to conceive of unexpected solutions to practical engineering problems that might otherwise defy one's intuition....

This book is written for scientists and engineers whose work involves wave reflec tion or transmission. Most of the book is written in the language of electromagnetic theory, but, as the title suggests, many of the results can be applied to particle waves, specifically to those satisfying the Schr6dinger equation. The mathematical connection between electromagnetic s (or TE) waves and quantum particle waves is established in Chapter 1. The main results for s waves are translated into quantum mechanical language in the Appendix. There is also a close analogy between acoustic waves and electromagnetic p (or TM) waves, as shown in Section 1-4. Thus the book, though primarily intended for those working in optics, microwaves and radio, will be of use to physicists, chemists and electrical engineers studying reflection and transmission of particles at potential barriers. The tech niques developed here can also be used by those working in acoustics, ocean ography and seismology. Chapter 1 is recommended for all readers: it introduces reflection phenomena, defines the notation, and previews (in Section 1-6) the contents of the rest of the book. This preview will not be duplicated here. We note only that applied topics do appear: two examples are the important phenomenon of attenuated total reflection in Chapter 8, and the reflectivity of multilayer dielectric mirrors in Chapter 12. The subject matter is restricted to linear classical electrodynamics in non-magnetic media, and the corresponding particle analogues....

This textbook can be used to teach electromagnetism to a wide range of undergraduate science majors in physics, electrical engineering or materials science. By making lesser demands on mathematical knowledge than typical texts, and by emphasizing electromagnetic properties of materials and their applications, this text is particularly appropriate for students of materials science. Many competing books focus on the study of propagation waves either in the microwave or optical domain, whereas Basic Electromagnetism and Materials covers the entire electromagnetic domain and the physical response of materials to these waves....

This book provides a comprehensive treatment of electromagnetic waves. The author's approach is thoroughly modern, and unlike many others, this text offers a unified view of electromagnetic waves and their applications in telecommunications, radar, and photonics. The extensive coverage of Electromagnetic Waves begins with Maxwell's equations and takes students on the journey from the wave and Helmholtz equations through polarization, plane waves, and wave beams and packets, to antennas, transmission lines, and waveguides. Completing the treatment are chapters devoted to diffraction and an introduction to the theory of coherence. The author strikes an effective balance of the teach-through-concepts and teach-by-example approaches. The book is filled with exercises, current applications, and exercises that solidify students' understanding and bring relevance to the material. It forms an outstanding text for senior undergraduates and graduate-level students in electrical engineering and physics....
