Embodied, avatar-mediated interaction is any interaction in which our natural patterns of movement are used to drive digital characters viewed by a remote observer. Recent hardware and software advances are making this form of communication a reality. It remains to be seen, however, whether such communication medium will be broadly desirable and practical for everyday use. One way to increase the chances of their widespread adoption is by augmenting these interactions in ways not possible in other mediums. By refining the behaviors displayed by the embodied avatars, rather than presenting the ground-truth movements of the users, interactions can be made more enjoyable and efficient. To create such refinements, however, we need a greater understanding of how communication is expressed and perceived within this medium. This dissertation presents a series of studies that increase our understanding of the types of communicative behaviors that occur within this medium and ways in which they can be modified to influence perceptual judgments of an observer. First, we present a user study designed to explore how remote partners distribute information across verbal and non-verbal channels during embodied, avatar-mediated, virtual reality interactions. The results provide strong motivation for further development of the medium; participants reported high levels of social presence, readily used intricate gesticulations to express complex ideas, and even expressed preferences for the medium over face-to-face communication for certain situations. Next, we present two experiments focused on understanding how gesticulation forms can be altered in order to influence an observer's personality perceptions. A main contribution of this work is identifying a set of gesticulation variations that significantly influence personality perception; the influence is validated with many different gestures, several different meshes, and even in the presence of spoken dialogue. A second contribution of this work is the discovery that, though personality is often measured in a five-dimensional space, the impacts of the gesticulation variation studied exist primarily in a two dimensional space. These results have implications for motion editing algorithms and for the field of virtual humans more generally. We next present a study that explores how educational stories, presented by embodied, virtual agents, can be adjusted in order to increase the verbal and visual engagement of primary school students. The results indicate that changing a story's point-of-view from a narrator-only, third-person telling to a first-person telling by story characters is an effective way to increase visual engagement. Further, the results indicate that question-prompting gestures are a useful way to increase verbal engagement. The results have implications for embodied, avatar-mediated storytelling and the wider field of interactive digital storytelling. Finally, we present a method to optimize existing motion style algorithms for use within a real-time, embodied, avatar-mediated, remote communication system: the optimized algorithm can run in real-time on a memory-limited mobile device and requires no future information. A second contribution is that our approach allows for fine-tuned control of the output motion: styles can easily be interpolated, extrapolated, or blended together. The approach described is broadly applicable for enhancing existing style translation algorithms for use in real-time applications.
