How black women have personified art, expression, identity, and freedom through performance Winner, 2016 William Sanders Scarborough Prize, presented by the Modern Language Association for an outstanding scholarly study of African American literature or culture Winner, 2016 Barnard Hewitt Award for Outstanding Research in Theatre History, presented by the American Society for Theatre Research Winner, 2016 Errol Hill Award for outstanding scholarship in African American theater, drama, and/or performance studies, presented by the American Society for Theatre Research Tracing a dynamic genealogy of performance from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, Uri McMillan contends that black women artists practiced a purposeful self- objectification, transforming themselves into art objects. In doing so, these artists raised new ways to ponder the Intersectionsof art, performance, and black female embodiment. McMillan reframes the concept of the avatar in the service of black performance art, describing black women performers’ skillful manipulation of synthetic selves and adroit projection of their performances into other representational mediums. A bold rethinking of performance art, Embodied Avatars analyzes daring performances of alterity staged by “ancient negress” Joice Heth and fugitive slave Ellen Craft, seminal artists Adrian Piper and Howardena Pindell, and contemporary visual and music artists Simone Leigh and Nicki Minaj. Fusing performance studies with literary analysis and visual culture studies, McMillan offers astute readings of performances staged in theatrical and quotidian locales, from freak shows to the streets of 1970s New York; in literary texts, from artists’ writings to slave narratives; and in visual and digital mediums, including engravings, photography, and video art. Throughout, McMillan reveals how these performers manipulated the dimensions of objecthood, black performance art, and avatars in a powerful re-scripting of their bodies while enacting artful forms of social misbehavior. Embodied, avatar-mediated interaction is any interaction in which our natural patterns of movement are used to drive digital characters viewed by a remote observer. Recent hardware and software advances are making this form of communication a reality. It remains to be seen, however, whether such communication medium will be broadly desirable and practical for everyday use. One way to increase the chances of their widespread adoption is by augmenting these interactions in ways not possible in other mediums. By refining the behaviors displayed by the embodied avatars, rather than presenting the ground-truth movements of the users, interactions can be made more enjoyable and efficient. To create such refinements, however, we need a greater understanding of how communication is expressed and perceived within this medium. This dissertation presents a series of studies that increase our understanding of the types of communicative behaviors that occur within this medium and ways in which they can be modified to influence perceptual judgments of an observer. First, we present a user study designed to explore how remote partners distribute information across verbal and non-verbal channels during embodied, avatar-mediated, virtual reality interactions. The results provide strong motivation for further development of the medium; participants reported high levels of social presence, readily used intricate gesticulations to express complex ideas, and even expressed preferences for the medium over face-to-face communication for certain situations. Next, we present two experiments focused on understanding how gesticulation forms can be altered in order to influence an observer's personality perceptions. A main contribution of this work is identifying a set of gesticulation variations that significantly influence personality perception; the influence is validated with many different gestures, several different meshes, and even in the presence of spoken dialogue. A second contribution of this work is the discovery that, though personality is often measured in a five-dimensional space, the impacts of the gesticulation variation studied exist primarily in a two dimensional space. These results have implications for motion editing algorithms and for the field of virtual humans more generally. We next present a study that explores how educational stories, presented by embodied, virtual agents, can be adjusted in order to increase the verbal and visual engagement of primary school students. The results indicate that changing a story's point-of-view from a narrator-only, third-person telling to a first-person telling by story characters is an effective way to increase visual engagement. Further, the results indicate that question-prompting gestures are a useful way to increase verbal engagement. The results have implications for embodied, avatar-mediated storytelling and the wider field of interactive digital storytelling. Finally, we present a method to optimize existing motion style algorithms for use within a real-time, embodied, avatar-mediated, remote communication system: the optimized algorithm can run in real-time on a memory-limited mobile device and requires no future information. A second contribution is that our approach allows for fine-tuned control of the output motion: styles can easily be interpolated, extrapolated, or blended together. The approach described is broadly applicable for enhancing existing style translation algorithms for use in real-time applications. In summary, the projects within this dissertation provide a variety of insights useful for understanding how behavioral encoding, processing, and decoding functions within embodied, avatar-mediated interactions....

Although references to spiritual beings, messengers and avatars are becoming more common in today's world, rarely does one come across the exposure of an actual human experience and life lived physically. Apparently, most avatars have attained their worldly mission privately and silently in all areas of human life without much public visibility. When physically embodied, avatars must go through the same development and conditioning as do all human beings to find purpose and fulfillment in the world. In direct and engaging language, the story is told revealing the life of Helen. P. Kipp, as a spiritual teacher on the Initiatory Path of Life. Without glamour or illusion often found with these subjects, the author manages to simplify and synthesize a vast body of metaphysical, religious and spiritual teachings and principles through the intriguing details of Helen's life. If the reader is willing to reach beyond conventional forms of relating to physical realities and belief systems, this book offers a bridge to insights on many levels and dimensions simultaneously....

Over the past decade, integrated STEM education research has emerged as an international concern, creating around it an imperative for technological and disciplinary innovation and a global resurgence of interest in teaching and learning to code at the K-16 levels. At the same time, issues of democratization, equity, power and access, including recent decolonizing efforts in public education, are also beginning to be acknowledged as legitimate issues in STEM education. Taking a reflexive approach to the intersection of these concerns, this book presents a collection of papers making new theoretical advances addressing two broad themes: Transdisciplinary Approaches in STEM Education and Bodies, Hegemony and Decolonization in STEM Education. Within each theme, praxis is of central concern including analyses of teaching and learning that re-imagines disciplinary boundaries and domains, the relationship between Art and STEM, and the design of learning technologies, spaces and environments. In addition to graduate research seminars at the Masters and PhD levels in Learning Sciences, Science Education, Educational Technology and STEM education, this book could also serve as a textbook for graduate and pre-service teacher education courses....

This Handbook brings together an international cast of experts to explore the social nature and context of creativity studies, focusing on methodology as a key component in advancing the social study of creativity. Two decades on from the pioneering work of Alfonso Montuori and Ronald E. Purser, the authors present a timely appraisal of past and present work in social creativity studies, and look ahead to future developments within this field. The authors collectively offer a rigorous examination of the methodological and empirical issues and techniques involved in studying social creativity. They examine the phenomenon as a form of communication and interaction within collaborative relationships; contending that creativity happens not within a vacuum but instead from a nexus of personal, social and contextual influences. This comprehensive work is organized in three parts, focusing first on the various methodological approaches applicable to the social in creativity studies. It secondly turns to empirical findings and approaches relating to the social nature of creativity. In the book’s final part, the authors offer reflections on the state of social research into creativity, pinpointing areas requiring further methodological scrutiny and empirical verification, and areas that may inspire further theoretical or applied work. Combining classic ideas with cutting-edge, emerging methods, this work provides a vital methodological ‘toolbox’ for investigators within social creativity....

The first book to offer a truly global perspective on the theory and practice of clinical psychology While clinical psychology is practiced the world over, up to now there has been no text devoted to examining it within a global context. The first book of its kind, Clinical Psychology: A Global Perspective brings together contributions from clinicians and scholars around the world to share their insights and observations on the theory and practice of clinical psychology. Due partly to language barriers and entrenched cultural biases, there is little cultural cross-pollination within the field of clinical psychology. In fact, most of the popular texts were written for English-speaking European and Anglo-American audiences and translated for other countries. As a result, most psychologists are unaware of how their profession is conceptualized and practiced in different regions, or how their own practices can be enriched by knowledge of the theories and modalities predominant among colleagues in other parts of the world. This book represents an important first step toward rectifying that state of affairs. Explores key differences and similarities in how clinical psychology is conceptualized and practiced with children, adolescents and adults across different countries and cultures Addresses essential research methods, clinical interviews, psychometric testing, neuropsychological assessments, and dominant treatment modalities Follows a consistent format with each chapter focusing on a specific area of the practice of clinical psychology while integrating cultural issues within the discussion Includes coverage of how to adapt one’s practice to the differing cultures of individual clients, and how to work in multidisciplinary teams within a global context Clinical Psychology: A Global Perspective is a valuable resource for students, trainees, and practicing psychologists, especially those who work with ethnic minority groups or with interpreters. It is also a must-read for practitioners who are considering working internationally....
