The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide disability benefits: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. SSDI provides disability benefits to people (under the full retirement age) who are no longer able to work because of a disabling medical condition. SSI provides income assistance for disabled, blind, and aged people who have limited income and resources regardless of their prior participation in the labor force. Both programs share a common disability determination process administered by SSA and state agencies as well as a common definition of disability for adults: "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." Disabled workers might receive either SSDI benefits or SSI payments, or both, depending on their recent work history and current income and assets. Disabled workers might also receive benefits from other public programs such as workers' compensation, which insures against work-related illness or injuries occurring on the job, but those other programs have their own definitions and eligibility criteria. Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment identifies and defines the professionally accepted, standard measurements of outcomes improvement for medical conditions. This report also identifies specific, long-lasting medical conditions for adults in the categories of mental health disorders, cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Specifically, these conditions are disabling for a length of time, but typically don't result in permanently disabling limitations; are responsive to treatment; and after a specific length of time of treatment, improve to the point at which the conditions are no longer disabling....

Every year workers' low-back, hand, and arm problems lead to time away from jobs and reduce the nation's economic productivity. The connection of these problems to workplace activities-from carrying boxes to lifting patients to pounding computer keyboards-is the subject of major disagreements among workers, employers, advocacy groups, and researchers. Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace examines the scientific basis for connecting musculoskeletal disorders with the workplace, considering people, job tasks, and work environments. A multidisciplinary panel draws conclusions about the likelihood of causal links and the effectiveness of various intervention strategies. The panel also offers recommendations for what actions can be considered on the basis of current information and for closing information gaps. This book presents the latest information on the prevalence, incidence, and costs of musculoskeletal disorders and identifies factors that influence injury reporting. It reviews the broad scope of evidence: epidemiological studies of physical and psychosocial variables, basic biology, biomechanics, and physical and behavioral responses to stress. Given the magnitude of the problem-approximately 1 million people miss some work each year-and the current trends in workplace practices, this volume will be a must for advocates for workplace health, policy makers, employers, employees, medical professionals, engineers, lawyers, and labor officials....

The purpose of this step-by-step manual is to provide physical therapists with an approach to evaluate adult clients for alignment, dimension, and compensation. With this manual, therapists will be treating the disorder rather than the symptoms. There are several books on the market that address musculoskeletal dysfunction; however, the Aston Postural Assessment Workbook is different It offers a variety of treatment methodologies in one book and can be referred to as the "one-stop-shopping" workbook....

Dental professionals spend their working lives in stressful environments and in awkward postures, with resultant musculoskeletal problems. While there are numerous books on musculoskeletal pain, there is nothing specific for dental professionals on the holistic approach to the self-management of musculoskeletal conditions. This book is a practical guide; it combines all the different modalities in a logical and systematic programme, firstly by recognising the possible causes of your predicament, and secondly by effectively managing it to prevent recurrence....

Balance Dysfunction in Parkinson’s Disease: Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Management presents the most updated information on a variety of topics. Sections help clinicians evaluate the types of balance control issues, dynamic balance dysfunction during turning, and the effects of medication, deep brain stimulation, and rehabilitation intervention on balance control. This book is the first to review the four main postural control systems and how they are affected, including balance during quiet stance, reactive postural adjustments to external perturbations, anticipatory postural adjustments in preparation for voluntary movements, and dynamic balance control during walking and turning. In addition, the book's authors summarize the effects of levodopa, deep brain stimulation, and rehabilitation intervention for each balance domain. This book is recommended for anyone interested in how and why balance control is affected by PD. Provides the first comprehensive review of research to date on balance dysfunctions in Parkinson's disease Discusses how to translate current neuroscience research into practice regarding neural control of balance Provides evidence on the effects of current interventions on balance control...

This book is an attempt to advance the discussion and improve our understanding about the effects of aging and movement disorders on motor control during walking and postural tasks. Despite these activities are performed daily, there is a high requirement of motor and neural systems in order to perform both tasks efficiently. Both walking and posture require a complex interaction of musculoskeletal and neural systems. However, the mechanisms used to control these tasks, as well as how they are planned and coordinated, are still a question of discussion among health professionals and researchers. In addition, this discussion is more interesting when the effects of aging are included in the context of locomotion and the postural control. The number of older individuals is 841 million in 2015, which is four times higher than the 202 million that lived in 1950. Aging causes many motor, sensorial and neural deficits, which impair locomotion and postural control in the elderly. The severity of this framework is worsened when the aging goes along with a movement disorder, such as Parkinson disease, Chorea, Dystonia, Huntington disease, etc. Therefore, the aim of this book is to highlight the influence of different aspects on planning, controlling and performing locomotion and posture tasks. In attempting to improve current knowledge in this field, invited authors present and discuss how environmental, sensorial, motor, cognitive and individual aspects influence the planning and performance of locomotor and postural activities. The major thrust of the book is to address the mechanisms involved in controlling and planning motor action in neurological healthy individuals, as well as in those who suffer from movement disorders or face the effects of aging, indicating the aspects that impair locomotion and postural control. In addition, new technologies, tools and interventions designed to manage the effects of aging and movement disorders are presented in the book....

In this Treatise on the Functional Pathology of the Musculoskeletal System (FPMSS), Dr Brooks presents a new paradigm for understanding the musculoskeletal system and a scientifically valid—reliable, semiquantifiable, and consistently interpretable—method for examining dysfunction thereof. This first volume presents the fundamentals of the paradigm and is designed for use by a primary care audience. While the paradigm is applicable to the wide variety of clinical conditions potentially amenable to manual medicine and related rehabilitative techniques, this first volume takes chronic, nonspecific musculoskeletal pain syndromes as its focus for application.

The FPMSS paradigm complements orthopedic, rheumatologic, and neurologic understandings of the musculoskeletal system and contrasts with current models of manual medicine in several important respects:

  • Understands the musculoskeletal system (MSS) as an integrated organ system
  • Discriminates questions about physiology from questions about anatomy
  • Discriminates questions about pathology from questions about physiology
  • Differentiates functional pathology from structural pathology
  • Appreciates principles of scientifically valid nomenclature for function and dysfunction of musculoskeletal structures as components of an integrated system
  • Recognizes dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system as inefficient function
  • Shifts the emphasis of examination for dysfunction from malalignment of structure/posture to disturbance of systemic movement
  • Discriminates control of posture and movement from imbalance of available motion
  • Grades available motion deficits using the criterion of proportionality—not merely symmetry—thus revealing otherwise unappreciated dysfunction and allowing for prioritization and profiling
  • Prioritizes mobilization interventions according to specified, ranked criteria
  • Profiles an individual’s motion phenotype based upon patterns of available motion deficits, thus providing “precision” biomechanical medicine

Use of the FPMSS paradigm examination will reduce the incidence of false negative and false positive findings for MSS dysfunction—thus improving the effectiveness, safety, and efficiency of caring for those suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain.
